PLANT DESCRIPTION

This condition, wind-dampness edema, arises from deficiency in the exterior combined with invasion of wind and dampness. Weak protective qi allows sweating and sensitivity to wind, while dampness in the channels causes a heavy body sensation. Superficial edema, urinary difficulty, a pale tongue with white coating, and a floating pulse indicate that the pathology is lodged in the superficial layers. Lung and Spleen deficiency further impair fluid movement, causing accumulation in the skin and worsening the edema.

When the exterior is invaded, the strategy is twofold: release the exterior and stabilize protective qi. Astragali Radix (huang qi) tonifies the protective qi, while Stephaniae tetrandrae Radix (han fang ji) releases the exterior, unblocks the channels, and promotes urination. Atractylodis macrocephalae Rhizoma (bai zhu) strengthens the Spleen and supports both herbs, while Glycyrrhizae Radix (gan cao), Zingiberis Rhizoma (sheng jiang), and Jujubae Fructus (da zao) harmonize the qi and blood, alleviating edema without harming the body’s normal functions.
